Glad to see Buckskin Joe made the list.
His book is in the library. It is based on his memoirs. A good read.
The ragged assed militia is a great story. The way he tells it in his book, they were in a depression - drought, grasshopper plague, and a general depression around the country - possibly 1893.
He said he went down into indian territory and shot at some indians. Then they ran back and told everyone the indians were coming.
That led to the creation of the militia, and they all did get paid.
We need someone like him around here today.
He had four daughters. Ive been curious as to what happened to them, but have not seen anything. ANyone have an information on them?

Buckskin Joe
Buckskin Joe Hoyt is famous in Arkansas City for walking a tightrope across Summit Street. He was one of the first settlers in Arkansas City. He started one of the first bands in Arkansas City the Buckskin Joe Border Band. During a time when there was little going on, he and a few other men started a big frenzy among the community and started the "Rugged Assed Militia," so that they would have something to do and could get paid by the government.
