In July 1878, the Cowley County Bank was held up by what was believed to be the James Gang in broad daylight. They took $1,800 from the bank. The tellar was Fred Farrar. No shots were fired.
At 9:50 a.m., four men rode into town. Two stopped at Finney's livery and fed their horses. They did not stable them, because they would soon need them. At 12:05 p.m., a man stepped into the bank and asked Mr. Farrar to cash a $20 bill. When he turned to do so, the man said, "Here, hand that bill back!" Then Farrar looked up and their was a gun in his face. Tow other men with guns cocked asked him to join them in the back room where he was guarded. The fourth man was standing guard at the door. The two men went for the horses, while the others watched Farrar. They said, "Good day, sir" and rode off. A posse followed, but they lost their trail northwest of town.
