Cherokee Indian History
The Cherokee, known as one of the "Five Civilized Tribes", originated on the East coast of North America in the current states of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. They are from the Iroquioian Linguistic group. They were known as one of the Five Civilized Tribes because they had taken on some of the characteristics of the Europeans who had come into the Americas. They were moved to North Eastern Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Western Kentucky and Tennessee after the President of the United States, Andrew Jackson, signed the New Echota treaty with the Cherokee and other tribes.
The Cherokee used only a portion of their land, leasing the Cherokee Outlet to the Cherokee Strip Livestock Association for cattle pasture. After several profitable years, the government, under duress from Boomers, decided to open the Outlet to white settlement. They paid the Cherokee a miniscule amount for the land. (The livestock association had offered a larger sum, but the goverment told the Cherokee that they had to give up the land for the amount that they offered, or have it taken for free). The Outlet was settled via the Cherokee Strip Land Rush on September 16, 1893.
The Cherokee Reserve is still in Northeastern Oklahoma, however, they don't own the land anymore. Private citizens own the area, but it is still considered their part of Oklahoma.
