Yes, there were several people who settled what would be Arkansas City. They started from Maine, and were known as the Maine colony. They eventually made it to Emporia, Ks where they became known as the Walnut Town Company. They were led by Capt. Norton. He led a group of what would be the instrumental people in the settlement of Arkansas City, Prof. Norton, his brother, Maj. Sleeth, H.P. Farrar and several others. They made a stop at El Dorado and then Winfield and stayed with Col. Manning. ( I believe it was Col.?) Sorry, don't have my research with me, as I am not at the museum. They finally settled between two rivers, the Arkansas and the Walnut. They battled (not physically) the Osage, but eventually their settlement took hold. It went through several name changes before it became Arkansas City. First it was Walnut, then Delphi, Crestwell and eventuall Arkansas City, when Sen. Edmund G. Ross made the decision, because he was tired of applying for the name and having towns already called what they had proposed. He chose Arkansas City because the town company's original choice had been after the Walnut River. He named it for the Arkansas River. The town took off and became a nice city with many businesses and industries.

There was a lot of early settlers . The osage were in the area and tried to burn the folks out and then asked for food. Boy, they had not read the book " how to win friends and influnce people" ha.But later became friendly. Laughing bluebird
