Settling in the Cherokee Outlet

Post  Admin on Thu Jun 25, 2009 2:40 am

Those who staked their claim had to proove up their claim by farming, building a dwelling and living on the land for 5 years before the land became theirs. Some people staked their claim and went to Kansas to get their families and came back to find that someone else had jumped their claims. Their were many court battles over claims, some fights and even some murders. After they had settled, many people could not take the harsh atmosphere, so they left before they prooved their claim. Some families still have the land in their possession today.

Heather has a spot in the museum that has a man putting down his claim flag and with weeds and dirt to look like the real event. Very well done. The guy looks like he could speak.Would like to know what they were thinking when they put the flag in the ground.Bluebird
