Opening the Cherokee STrip

Post  Admin on Thu Jun 25, 2009 2:31 am

Those individuals who had registered for the run as well as those who only wanted to run for the fun of it lined up and waited along the state line and the southern border of the Cherokee Outlet wating for the great race. They also boarded a train at the Santa Fe Depot so that they could ride a train into the outlet.

At noon, the gun shot off and a mad dash for land began. People rode horses, buggies, wagons, bicycles, trains and walked or ran to get the land. Each person could stake a quarter section of land. Once they did this, they had to proove up the claim so that they got to keep the claim forever.
