over 100,000

Arkansas City, KS was a town of 5,000 people until the settlers started arriving to make the race. Over 100,000 people lined the banks of the Arkansas River camping out waiting for the run. It seems the city father's had marketed Arkansas City as the prime place to "jump off" into the Outlet. It paid off, because Arkansas City had two registration booths instead of one like the other towns with booths did. Of course, after the run, the town was back down to 5,000.

Preparing for the land rush

Post  Admin on Thu Jun 25, 2009 2:27 am

From 1889 until the eventual opening of the Cherokee Outlet, people came from all over the world to try for a piece of land. They camped on the river banks in the areas where the pre-race registration was. In preparation for the run people had to fill out pre-race registration, which meant standing in the hot dry sun for days waiting to reach the registration booth. Once they finally registered they waited around for the day of the event.
