Yes, he is. He trained under IH Bonsall. He took many photos of the Native Americans in Indian Territory. He took photos of their lifestyles and some portraits unlike many photographers who liked to pose dramatic photos. Prettyman trained Cornish, Croft, Cussick and several other photographers.

W.S. Prettyman is famous for his photos of the Cherokee Strip Land Rush. He build a tower on the NE corner of the Chilocco Indian School land to photograph the start of the run. He set up the cameras to point at particular areas he wanted to photograph and had 3 interns on the stand. He told them how many seconds apart to take the photos. He then got down, ran in the landrush and staked a claim. He was the first mayor of Blackwell, Ok. When he moved, he left all of his photo equipment, but one camera behind with Cornish.
