The history of Cherokee Removal

Post  Admin on Thu Jun 25, 2009 12:32 am

In 1838, the Cherokee were forcibly moved from Georgia, Tennesee, Alabama and North Carolina to Indian Territory, which is now Oklahoma. The Treaty between the US government and the Cherokee that called for the Cherokee removal was called the Treaty of Echota, which was part of the Indian Removal Acto of 1830. Approximately 4,000 Cherokees perished from the forced march. The Cherokee were one out of five tribes that were moved during the Trail of Tears. These tribes are referred to as the 5 Civilized Tribes: Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek and Seminole.
