There are stone bridges all over Cowley County and some are falling down and have not been used for many years. Some are not used due to changing of the roads or just because the location or land around the bridge has changed and does not hold the stones solid as time and weather take a toil.
There are some due to location and structure of the material and the ground and maintance over the years have kept them in good condition.
There are many people who have succeeded to make these bridges an interest of the public. Folks that like the things that made life easier for country folks and getting to town or school or moving farm products easier and took less time to get home after a dance.
There is a tour of the bridges and pictures taken of them when they were first built and in the recent years to make the younger generation aware of these wonderful land marks.
The process and equipment and pure muscle it took to make these bridges is mind boggling before they had big equipment.
Some are still used on township roads,or private roads. Some are used for daily travel by a lot of people and some sitting out of sight, but when they were built they helped make life easier and faster for the folks using them.
There is a desire to put the bridges that qualify or meet requirements could be put on the historic list.If you are interested in helping ,use this site savethebridges@yahoo.com and pass on any information you have on this subject or any help you want to give on these bridges.
The beauty of all the different seasons around these bridges is something a person needs to see to appreciate. Also there is water flowing around the bridge base that is beautiful. Thank you.bluebird Very Happy

the stone bridges of cowley county are special. the bridges that are in good condition should be preserved. i have started the process of registering one bridge for historic designation. there are others bridges in the county that could also qualify. if anyone has information on other bridges that would quilify for historic designation or if you would like to sponsor the nomination of a bridge for historic designation please get involved. it costs nothing to nominate a bridge, just some leg work and the proper applications to the right agencys. anyone interested in getting involved or that would like to help can contact ol' Dr. snyder at" savethebridges@yahoo.com " lets save the bridges. thanks.
