hoyt history
Hank, Thank you for adding interesting information about the Hoyt family. There is Hoyts around Dexter, Ks. 20 miles east of Arkansas City and good friends of Old Salt and my families since we were very young.Good people.
There is a book at the museum, thanks to Heather, and I have not had time to really look at it very much,so there may be something there.
Appreciate your input.Thank you Bluebird

Re: what happened to Joe
Being a Hoyt myself, different branch, I stumbled onto some family history. There are 2 books in google books about the 'Hoyt Family History'. These were written (1st.) early- mid 1800's. The next was later in the 19th century. If your a Hoyt, Hoit, Hoitt, or Hiaght, it all falls inline.

wife name
I have found in doing family history and going back to late 1790 to late 1890 time frame. a lot of wives were referred to Mr. and Mrs ----- and there might have his name, but not hers and I found a head stone that did not have her name still Mrs. ----.It seemed I found that a lot. He probably made plans with someone to meet the stage. Bluebird

joe's wife
THanks, Ill look into those sites.
There is a lot of information in his book, which is at the library. His grandson ? i guess ? and a local writer, compiled the book from joe's diary.
There were also lots of stories about him in the Traveler.
One odd thing, in the book, there is hardly a mention of his wife. Except that he had one.
He really does not write about her at all. Maybe it was just the times he lived in. He only mentions her in passing a couple times in the book. Im not even sure he tells her name.
But she was a canadian. They grew up in the same area. Awhile after coming to Arkansas City, he sent for her, and she came by stagecoach with the children. That is about all he says about her.
He was not at the stage to meet her. She had to make arrangements to have someone take her out to his farm. But I guess you probably would not know when the stage would arrive, so ...

what happened to joe
He moved to california around 1900, sold his property here and retired.
I have heard that he is buried here in Arkansas City, but I am not sure.
He lived to be an old man, till 1918 or so.
