Strother Field was planned for an airport for the county owned by Winfield and Arkansas City. While construction was starting the U.S. Army Air Force wanted it for training cadets. That was April 1942 and the first class of Cadets started training Dec.1942. Buildings were built for the hangars and living quarters for the Cadets.
July 1944,the field was transferred to Second Air Force for advanced Fighter Pilot Training.
Oct. 1945 , the military turned it back to Winfield and Arkansas City.The field was named for Capt. Donald Root Strother. He was from Winfield.First Army Air Force Pilot from Cowley County killed in WWII bluebird
